AduLt Learn to Row Programmes

The Adult Learn To Row programme at Coalporters is an introduction to sculling on the Itchen Estuary.
What to expect:
- Professionally trained coaches, specialising in coaching beginners through to experienced rowers
- A friendly and welcoming club environment that is open to all
- Learning to row as part of a small group for the best learning experience
The aims of this programme are:
- To ensure that participants are able to carry, enter and exit the boat, and manoeuvre a sculling boat safely
- To start enjoying the river in a safe way
- To learn how to position your body to row effectively
- To establish a sound technique so you are ready to join Coalporters Rowing Club and develop your rowing further with our recreational or performance groups.
Teaching will be conducted by a professionally qualified coach accompanying you on the water. There will be some land work – whilst we try to keep this to a minimum, some learning is best done on the land and then put into practice on the water.
Coalporters isn’t just any Boat Club, it is a diverse and welcoming community who share a love of rowing. We are fortunate to enjoy the best stretch of water for rowing south of the Thames Valley, from the quaint weir at Woodmill, to the historic docks where Titanic set sail.
So, whether you are a complete beginner or someone who has been out of a boat for a while, our Learn to Row can accommodate all levels of experience. Our professionally trained coaches will deliver safe and enjoyable sessions, covering everything from technique on the water to the navigation patterns of the River Itchen.
The learn to row programme includes ten practical sessions over the course of five weeks. Each session is 1.5 hours long.
Our next learn to row course will start on 7th May 2026 with sessions on Thursday evenings at 7pm and Sunday mornings at 10am. We are not able to substitute missed sessions for sessions at other times.
To register your interest for this course, or to be notified of future courses at Coalporters, please complete this short form.
