Rowing Categories
Novices
Our novice squad is open to anyone over the age of 18 who are looking to learn how to row. The aim of the squad is to prepare you to compete at the novice level of racing and to have fun while you do so. Novice training consists of learning the technique of the rowing stroke, learning how to consistently apply this to move a rowing boat, and gradually building strength and fitness to support competing.
Juniors
Our junior (under 18) squad helps develop our 12-18-year-old members into becoming competitive athletes. Our junior coaches do this in a safe and supportive environment. The aim of the squad is to prepare our juniors to compete at a young athlete level, such as at the National Junior Inter-Regional Regatta and in specific junior categories at the same regattas the club attends. We would typically expect juniors to commit to training at least once during the week and once at the weekend. The level of training will vary depending on the level of competition you are working towards.
Competitive
The competitive squads are split into men and women’s squads, and are often split down further into their sub squads depending on which categories they compete in (Junior, Junior-Senior, Senior). This squad is for those who have gained a reasonable amount of rowing experience, either through racing within the local Hampshire and Dorset Rowing Amateur Association (Hants and Dorset ARA) regattas, or whom have other prior competitive rowing experience from elsewhere. The squads are strictly for those wishing to train and compete. The aim of the squad is to develop its athletes to fulfil their potential of winning at their highest competitive level possible. This typically includes winning Hants and Dorset ARA championships, South Coast championships, Henley Royal regatta, and other British Rowing head races and regattas.
We would expect our competitive athletes to train three to four times during the week, and both days at weekends. The amount of training and intensity of the programme will depend on the athlete’s ambitions and level of competition.
Southampton Solent University Rowing Club
The Southampton Solent University Rowing Club is also part of Southampton Coalporters ARC. They will typically train within their own squad throughout the winter and leading up to their main university events, the British University Championships Regatta (BUCs). The main aim of the squad is to reach the best possible ranking within the BUCs Regatta each year, and to also win at other British Rowing head races and regattas. The rowers from this squad will also feed into the other Coalporters squads during the summer Hants and Dorset coast season. Training during the winter and spring can involve early morning water sessions as well as evening land-based sessions, training anywhere between four to ten times a week depending on experience and ambitions.
Masters
Our Masters squads are for those who are above 40 years old and are still looking to train either causally or competitively. Within the Hants and Dorset ARA regattas there is an over 40s and over 50s category for those who wish to continue to compete. The aim of the squad is to win Masters 40s and 50s categories, as well as promote health and wellbeing for those who have retired from competitive racing.
Recreational
Recreational rowing is for members who wish to be part of the club and row without committing to a full training programme. The aim of this membership group is to promote staying fit and healthy in a fun and supportive environment. Recreational rowers also have the opportunity to meet rowers from other clubs and take part in rowing events around the country.
Coaches
Coalporters have selection of dedicated and qualified rowing coaches who invest their spare time outside of their full time jobs to coach and develop the athletes at our club. Coaches are typically allocated to specific squads or crews, based on their own preferences and levels of commitment they are able to give.
